An insurance and risk management major, McCarty was one of 17 college students awarded paid NAPSLO internships this past summer, out of more than 150 applicants. McCarty was able to double down, spending 5 weeks at Vela and 4 weeks at Sullivan. Then, he was named one of the top 3 interns in the program and awarded the JH Blades Scholarship, which will take him to London for a third internship upon graduation.
“This internship was unique because I got to see both sides of the industry—carrier and wholesale brokerage—with one experience,” McCarty said.
Rebecca Wray, director of the university’s Gongaware Center for Insurance and Financial Services, was also quite happy with McCarty’s scholarship.
“The NAPSLO internship is a highly competitive program where students are selected from across the country,” she said, adding that McCarty is one of Gongaware’s top current students. “The internship in and of itself is prestigious, but the Blades Scholarship is the highest honor he could have received.”
“I’ve seen firsthand through my internships what it will take to be successful in the industry, which is something you can’t really learn from a book,” McCarty said. “You have to shadow successful people and see their priorities when it comes to a business relationship and try to mold yourself into that.”
Thanks to NAPSLO, Vela Insurance Services, The Sullivan Group and the University of Indiana, college senior Cameran McCarty may well be on his way to launching an insurance career.
